This week I am listening to an artist who I had never heard of, and I have to thank Acoustic Tuesday viewer Andrew D. for introducing me to this artist.
His voice is mesmerizing… scratch that… hypnotizing. His playing is sparse, but it’s main mission is to serve the song, and it does so perfectly. The balancing act between his voice, his playing, and his songwriting is expertly executed.
Colter Wall is the individual I am referring to and if you have not heard him yet, you are in for a treat. Hell, even if you have heard him before you are still in for a treat. Both of his albums (Self Titled and Imaginary Appalachia) are absolute gems.
Oh and one more thing… the voice… to try and describe it would be futile, but what the hell… It’s like George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, amongst others are being channeled through Colter. Don’t misinterpret though… he isn’t copying, Colter is all his own and his unique vocal stylings shine on songs that are written by a master’s pen.
It’s quite possible that Colter’s newest album, the Self Titled one, may well be the best album released in the year 2017. That’s my opinion, but it really is one of those records that you can never tire of.
