This guitar geek film recommendation is brought to you by honorary guitar geek and Acoustic Tuesday viewer David M. I am super excited to watch this documentary because it contains footage and stories from some of the most important musicians in blues history…
The documentary that David M. wants us guitar geeks to know about is entitled, “Sidemen: Long Road to Glory.” This documentary focuses on blues sidemen: Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, Pinetop Perkins, and Hubert Sumlin. This film focuses on each of their stories and struggles with being a side musician in some of the biggest blues bands in history.
This film is a guitar geek’s dream. Not only does it focus on the side musicians it also offers perspective on these greats from some of the blues world’s top musicians. Musicians like: Greg Allman, Bonnie Raitt, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi and more all make an appearance to share how important these pivotal musicians are to the blues.
If you like the blues, if you like music documentaries, if you like backstage stories it looks like this film is right up your alley. I know I am excited to watch this one.
Currently you can purchase the film on DVD or via direct download from the iTunes store ( It looks like it’s about $24 for the DVD and $12 or so for the download ). This will surely make for a very educational guitar geek movie night… make sure to pop some popcorn, pour a glass of bourbon, and get comfy for this one.
