Amongst slope shoulder dreadnought guitars this one is the bee’s knees. It is a jack of all trades, a potent fingerpicker, a competent partner for flatpicking, and a dream to sing with.
The Santa Cruz Vintage Southerner is an absolute wonder of a guitar. From fingerpicking to flatpicking it has all of the bases covered.
On the spec sheet the VS seems like your ordinary guitar, but after playing this guitar I think you will agree that it is far from standard. There is a presence of mid range and a bark that gives this seemingly sweet guitar a serious attitude.
Check out the review to hear this guitar in action, get a full spec run down, and to find out what a guitar like this eats for lunch… I’m not even joking.

OK-it’s a J-45.
It is a beautiful and a wonderful sounding guitar. I have a request from you Tony. Would you please give a review and a demonstration of the new Guild D-55 for us. It would be wonderfully great of you.
Thanks! Enlightening; enjoyable!
My initial ‘whoa’ is ‘pricey’- I don’t know.
Where,s it made?
Beautiful sounding guitar, and I really enjoyed watching Tony doing one of his original style reviews again.Missed hearing Bluegrass Rhythm on this one,but was still a treat.
Hi Tony – It looks like a great instrument, but $6000+? For that kind of money I expect a little more eye candy. Watching your review, it looked interesting, but when I see what $6000 buys with Gibson, Martin, Taylor, or virtually ANYBODY, this piece simply doesn’t look the part. I have serious questions as to how they justify the price – what in their construction process and material choices is so elaborate as to make this relatively plain guitar approach a Dove in value?
Richard Hoover’s instruments “are” different. I’ve visited his factory several times over the years and am always highly impressed with what I see and hear. I have several acoustic instruments, nothing beats the Santa Cruz. Very special
