Darrell Scott

This week’s featured artist comes from Acoustic Tuesday Viewer Ted Renshaw from Southold, NY. I was so happy that Ted mentioned this artist because the man is a true songwriting treasure.

From his playing, to his singing, to the constant variations of his songs, as well as his writing, this songwriter is one that is about as prolific as they get. His songs weave tales in an effortless manner, and as a listener you are always in for a wild musical and lyrical ride.

Darrell Scott has written some of the most iconic songs in popular music. Songs such as “Long Time Gone” made famous by the Dixie Chicks, along with “It’s a Great Day to Be Alive” sung by Travis Tritt all came from Darell Scott’s pen as well as many many others. This though, is only one facet of Darrell Scott.

Darell’s writing has obviously been widely acclaimed judging by the folks who have chosen to record his songs, but as a guitar and music geek you need to dive into his full catalog because therein lies a treasure chest of beautifully written and composed songs.

I also feel that Darrell’s guitar playing should get the spotlight in addition to his songwriting. His guitar playing is so focused on how to best support the song it is like a masterclass in the tonal possibilities of an acoustic guitar. From alternate tunings to palm muted rhythm Darrell uses the full spectrum of what the acoustic guitar is capable of… and he doesn’t stop on the acoustic guitar… the man plays everything from piano to banjo to slide… you name it he plays it, and he plays it very well.

Darrell’s performances contain absolutely magical moments. His playing, singing, and song selection are products purely of the moment, and his varying treatments of songs keep you engaged throughout. He is the type of performer that seems most comfortable in the moment, and is an inspiration to anyone watching.

All in all, Darrell Scott is someone who will be fancied by acoustic music lovers as well as folks who appreciate a well structured song. His discography is one that you can easily dive into and find gem after gem for years and years to come.

… and to think I didn’t even include his collaborations with Tim O’Brien… that is a whole other rabbit hole that welcomes acoustic music lovers as well.
