#4 String Guage Selection Guide
A question I get quite often is that of string gauge. “Which gauge should I use and why?” It’s a great question because string gauge can impact your guitar’s tone, feel, and physical qualities. So in today’s episode, I give you the details on what to think about when choosing which gauge is right for you.
#3 What’s On the Turntable This Week?
This week’s featured artist has been on constant repeat for the entire Acoustic Life team. I’m talking about Phoebe Bridgers. An indy artist who seems to have a magical ability when it comes to songwriting and lyrical content. She’s released some kind of work every year since 2017 and all three releases NEED to be in your record collection.

#2 A Hockey, Bourbon, Guitar Collision
I’ve been looking for a while now for some way to get my love for hockey into the show. In and of itself it clearly doesn’t fit to have a segment… but I found a way to make it happen. Turns out that playing guitar and being a goalie is right up a human brain’s alley. Good for me AND for you since you get to meet some guitar geek hockey players, including a retired NHL goalie who is now making bourbon.
#1 Jason Momoa and Colter Wall
Sometimes I have a little extra time on my hands and I find myself going down a black hole of acoustic guitar related videos on YouTube. In this case, it paid off because I stumbled across this little gem of one of my favorite artists being fanboy’d by none other than Aquaman himself, Jason Momoa, of whom I am said to resemble.
Hi Tony and Noah,
John from Colorado Springs!
Love the show!
John
Oh, man. Every once in a while I’m validated.
I can’t remember how I came across Tony Polecastro, but I know it was about a year ago. I was caught by an advertisement and as a semi-guitarist (haven’t actively played in years), I saw some of the lessons he provided and thought, “Wow, maybe this guy can help me break into a new phase of playing.”
Fast forward a year. I keep getting emails from Tony’s mailing list. Guilt wells every time I don’t dig in to see what I can learn. I work long hours and am in the midst of a college endeavor (and I’m 44), with a family- so time is a commodity. Today’s email from Tony, though, was something I couldn’t ignore. The autoplay vid showed me images of hockey (Go, Sharks!) and Phoebe Bridgers. For the last 4 months, I’ve been geeking out on Phoebe and the Better Oblivion Community Center.
Thank you so much for digging into today’s topics. You’ve validated my tastes in sports and music. 🙂 I will take your emails more seriously from here on out: It sounds like they are geared toward a person like me.
# you know your a guitar geek when, your weekly fishing trip buddies keep coming to you and asking could you get this knot out of my line[ WITH THOSE FINGER PICKING FINGER NAILS.
Yea Tony, This is your [go lightning guy] loving the hockey stuff. Even though you did not mention Vasy. And I know we are down 3, have to go pray now. Thanx yoy guys from FL.
Enjoyed the show as usual, but I realised a couple of things I’ve been unaware of. 1. I always thought that Tony played Hockey on a grass field, not on ice! 2. I also thought AT went out live when in fact it’s pre-recorded! Well I guess you learn something every day. Lovely photo of your daughter Noah, she’s a real sweetie. London, England.
The humidity packs are good for taking a few cigars on the road with you, when you can’t take your full humidor. By the way, cigars go very nicely with bourbon. Just sayin’
LMAO about the guitar hanger stuggle in your kitchen, Tony! And Noah, love, love, love your pic of your daughter and new dog. Andrew and I have had Border Collies for years… they love guitar!
