If you hate using guitar picks then this quick lesson is for you.
Some guitar geeks just don’t like guitar picks and that’s ok (some, like chicken pickers, like to use both their fingers and a pick), but what do you do when you want to strum along to a song?
You certainly don’t want to sit the tune out so in this short video I am going to share with you 3 ways you can strum along to a song without a guitar pick.

So with the fake pick method, the nail on my index finger strikes the strings on the down strum, I am assuming. What strikes the strings on the upstrum?
Hey Freddy, I’m pretty sure he’s using his thumbnail on the upstroke.
For me, my thumb nail naturally tends to hit the upstrum as my hand also naturally rotates slightly when I strum. It feels more comfortable to me and doesn’t cause that nail pulling feeling when upstruming with my index nail which I can’t stand, and you get about the same articulation and volume with both up and down strums. Hope this was helpful
The same nail – you’ll kinda hybrid a bit of finger pickin’ style
Awesome stuff Tony ..thanks.. As I fast approach the grand age of 60 I love when you youngsters throw tips like this one out there in an effort to keep the learning process fun..God Bless you and thanks for sharing your talents…
I’ve been flat picking without a pick for 46 years, have never used a pick.
It’s how I was taught to do it and it has worked well for almost 50 years so I guess I’m ok.
