While you might say no, I’ve found that playing a famous guitarist’s signature model guitar has a surprising effect on your playing — and not in the ways that you might think!

In this episode of Acoustic Tuesday at Home, we’re taking a look at the guitar that changed where I draw inspiration and creativity from on my guitar journey.
I’ve had so much fun filming at my home studio this week, and I have tons of goodies to share with you!
I was lucky enough to get a SIGNED version of Molly Tuttle’s new album “…but i’d rather be with you.” It’s a beautiful album with an equally stunning vinyl that you don’t want to miss!
You’ll also get a sneak peek at my new baby boy Emerson Townes’ FIRST GUITAR PEDALBOARD. And I know what you’re thinking…how is that possible? Well, fortunately, 1915 Pedalboards made it happen!
Last but certainly not least, you’ll get an inside look at Tom Sands’ workshop. Specifically, you’ll get to see the wood that Tom will be using to build my guitar!

Wow Tony, this episode really hit home with me. I have been frustrated with my guitar playing lately. This happens after recording and listening to myself. It’s been kind of depressing on what I hear. Here I think I am making progress while I practice every day but when I record, it sucks! I think you might have hit the nail on the head when you said “every guitar player is unique” A light bulb went off. I have been comparing myself with other players that I will never be as good as. I think now I need to focus on becoming the player I am. Thanks again.
Many Beatles inspired purchases: epiphone Casino, Rickenbacker 360, epiphone EJ 160E;
Santana: Santana PRS, Martin D-28 for Neil Young; Les Paul Traditional for Jimmy Page and Neil Young;
Gibson SG (Robbie Krieger of the Doors); Fender Stratocaster (Clapton); Pat Metheny model PM-2 for Pat Metheny. Sadly I haven’t learned to play like any of these guitar heroes of mine but I feel like I’m surrounded by my friends.
I bought an Martin D-28 because I saw Tony Rice Pick his and I knew I had to have one. It is a classic insturment and the way Tony plays it sounded great. I love me D-28
I bought an Ovation Acoustic after hearing and seeing Nancy Wilson from Heart playing an ovation.
A bit of a depressing topic for me…as both purchases haven’t really panned out:
Fender telecaster after watching both Joe Strummer (Clash) and Dave Pirner (Soul Asylum) play one.
Taylor 8 string baritone after seeing a demo video on you tube by Dave Young.
Again…both guitars have been severely underutilized. Electric nerves really took off for me, and the 8 string baritone is an exotic beast to say the least. My guess is there will be a day when my guitar skills reach a point that the baritone will “click” when I pick it up but it seems a long long long way off.
My wife is very patient with me, luckily.
Hey Tony! I’m a TAC member and regular AT viewer. Regarding your question about buying guitars played by your heroes. Years ago, I lusted after a Martin D28S as played by Peter Yarrow. I couldn’t afford one. Then a friend of mine got one and I realized as you have pointed out: It’s the Indian, not the arrow. That being said, I’m currently looking at a Blue Ridge BR 371, which is a replica of Joan Baez’s vintage 042. I tell myself it’s because I don’t have a parlor guitar or a short scale, but the real appeal is how cool I think it looks. I saw one that even had the torch inlay in the headstock, but it was already sold.
I bought a Gibson J50 before James Taylor used on on Fire and Rain. In the sixties your choice were Gibson J45/50, Guild D40, & Martin D-18. You can sound as good as anyone if you practice the simpler songs. Bought a nylon string guitar because of Igor Presnyakov . Love my Guild Doyle Dykes Signature because it is set up for fingerpicking. The sound of a good guitar should inspire you to practice more and get better.
