From the more familiar bajo sexto to the vihuela, this video will take a close look at the instruments that make up a traditional mariachi music. From there, you’ll join me in the studio to see how you can apply instrument-specific techniques to the acoustic guitar.
You’ll learn how to arpeggiate like mariachi harp, strum like a vihuela player, and provide rock solid rhythm like a bajo sexto player!
In addition to looking at acoustic guitar lessons from mariachi music, you’ll hear about how TAC Family members overcame their fear of playing for others. It’s not always easy to put yourself out there, but after hearing this story, I think you’ll be a little more inspired.
Last but not least, you’ll hear from Daisy Tempest of Tempest Guitars on how to design a custom guitar. You’ll also hear about The Infamous Stringdusters new album and Submarine Pickups’ new state-of-the-art pickup technology!
The Domra instrument has some interesting variations that transcends to the guitar.
I have never thought I had the skills to play in a setting where other people have been playing.
As always, great information from Acoustic Tuesday’s program. I’ve played bass guitar in a duo for quite a few years and although it’s been awhile (about 8 years), I still am driven to do bass runs in my playing. So thank you bass guitar for adding highlights (although not perfect) to my playing.
Another fun strum pattern is Bolero (usually Mariachi ukulele), also transfers well to many songs.
Tony, I am having problems learning. I’ve been on lesson 1 the blues shuffle. I am having issues with moving my fingers and finding the correct fret and string. Can you help me? I’ve been on lesson for several weeks.
I think the ukulele and the guitar compliment each other.
yup! this is the best on line program found! new and fresh ideas daily! Its not easy, but its fun and a skill stretch every day!
I’m not ready to quit my day job but sure is nice to come home to! Comfort to hold in my arms and play everyday!
What is a mute? How do you do it?
Hey Tony, I want to let you know that my 12-string experience started with a bajo sexto. I am embarrassed to tell you that I did not realize the 12-string guitar I bought in college was actually a Mariachi instrument made by the Kay guitar company. The truth only became known to me when I took the 50+ year-old instrument to a local luthier for a neck reset. He filled me in and made the guitar playable once again, now with a compensated bridge and a sound hole pickup. I keep this guitar open-tuned to D, and continue to find songs that work well in that tuning. I did include it in my guitarsenal picture, which you featured a year or more ago. Thanks for the thoughtful encouragement to try other instruments: it worked for me before I even knew it!
Cheers!
